Marlins Top Ten Prospects

by @ 8:04 am. Filed under 2008 Marlins

Baseball America released their list of top ten Marlins prospects and at the top of the list for the second year is pitching prospect Chris Volstad.  The righthander continued his ascent with a solid season at both High A and Double A and while he’ll probably start back at Carolina, it looks like we could see the blue chip in a Marlins uniform at some point in 2008.

The Marlins first round draft pick in 2006, Brett Sinkbeil, comes in at number two.  Another pitcher, Sinkbeil was solid in fourteen starts at Jupiter and his downside have been the injuries.  He missed ten weeks in 2007 and BA thinks that it’ll prompt a return to High A to start the 2008 season.

Ryan Tucker and Sean West come in at three and four on the pitching heavy list.  West is a huge wild card because he missed all of 2007 with a torn labrum.  Tucker is like the two guys ahead of him in that he’s close but needs a look in Double A.

You have to go all the way to number six to find a position player and that’s Chris Coghlan.  The second baseman had a nice season at Low A but struggled when he got to Jupiter, where he’ll probabl repeat.  2007 first round pick Matt Dominguez landed at number seven on the list.

A nice crop and it’ll be interesting to see if any of those top five guys make some noise and get a look with the Marlins in 2008.  Volstad is the stud and he has the best chance but that doesn’t mean one of the other guys could step up and make a move.
