The Marlins signed Dontrelle Willis to a one year, $6.45 million deal today and in the process, avoided arbitration with the popular left hander. Willis is one of the most popular players on the team and while he’s two years removed from his near Cy Young season, even his mediocre seasons are pretty good.
With four seasons under his belt, the Marlins are going to have to figure out what they want to do with Willis long term. He will get over a $2 million raise but he stands to make Barry Zito money in a couple of years when he lands on the free agent market.
