Marlins Drop 3rd Straight, 7-6

by @ 8:20 pm. Filed under 2008 Marlins

Florida lost their 3rd straight game at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds in another nail bitter. The game looked like it was going to be a blow-out shut-out but the Marlins strung together 6 runs in the top of the 9th tying the score and sending the game to extra innings where Florida ended up losing. The loss brings the Marlins record to 23-17 and despite the losses they are still atop the NL East.

The offense was pretty much nonexistent through 8 innings until the top of the 9th where the bats came alive. They collected 10 hits total including 4 extra base hits. CF Cody Ross had the most impressive game for Florida going 1-for-4 including a 3 run homer in the 9th. The homer is his 4th of the season and the 3 RBI bring his total to 10. Catcher Matt Treanor also had a good game for the Fish going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. He now has his batting average up to .279 and his RBI total at 9. The final RBI came off the bat of Luis Gonzalez who hit 1-of-5 including a double, 1 RBI and a run scored. His batting average is at a solid .276 and has brought his RBI to 11. I would be crazy if I didn’t mention Florida’s best player, Hanley Ramirez, who went 2-for-5 bringing his batting average to a impressive .327.

Ricky Nolasco took the mound for the Marlins and pitched what some might categorize as shaky. He pitched 4 2/3rds innings giving up 5 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks and 4 Ks. His ERA is now at 5.18. Renyel Pinto was given the loss for the club after pitching just 1 2/3rds innings bringing his record to 1-2. Bronson Arroyo was given the start for the Reds and pitched a solid 7 innings and would have earned the win if not for the clutch 9th inning but the Marlins. Arroyo allowed just 5 hits, 0 runs, 3 walks and 5 K’s. His ERA dropped to 6.08 but was stuck with a no decision. Jared Burton earned the win for the Reds pitching the 10th inning when the Reds got 1 run across to take the game and the series.

Hopefully we see the Marlins get back to their winning ways because the Phillies are hot on their tail. They have 1 more game left against the Reds then open up a 3 game series against the KC Royals. We’ll have to see if Florida has gotten their game back in this next set of games.
