Florida opened up a 3 game series against the San Francisco Giants on Friday with a 8-2 loss. The loss brings the Marlins record down to 27-20 but they still are out in front of the NL East now 1.5 games ahead of the Braves.
The offense really seemed to stagger their way through the game only collecting 5 hits, 2 of which were for extra bases. Dan Uggla had the best game by far for Florida going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. 1 of the RBI came from a homer Uggla hit in the 9th inning bringing his season total to 15 and his RBI count up to 34. His batting average also went up and it now stands at a strong .320. Nobody else really seemed to be as effective and the other 3 hits the team got were spread all over the order. Jorge Cantu went 1-for-3 with a walk.
Scott Olsen took the mound for the Marlins and had a very poor outing for his ball club. He only worked 3 1/3rd innings before being yanked. Before he was pulled he allowed 8 hits, 7 runs, 5 earned, 3 walks and 2 homers. He was given the loss for the team bringing his record to 4-2 this season. The reliever that followed really did a good job of stopping the Giants rallies. They pitched a combined 5 2/3rd inning only allowing 2 hits and 1 run. Not bad for the bullpen but it was about 7 runs too late.
An overall poor game for both the offense and the starting pitcher. If we could have had the effective pitching that we got from the bullpen in the beginning of the game we might be talking about a victory. The teams will face again in game 2 on Saturday at 7pm.
