It came down to the final at bat but Mike Jacobs belted a walk off solo homer in the bottom of the ninth as the Marlins beat the Pirates 5-4. It capped off a three for five night in which Jacobs scored three times. Hanley Ramirez picked up three hits while Josh Willingham came through with a single, a homerun, two RBIs and two runs.
Scott Olsen had a rough start and he gave up four runs in six innings but the pen did their job. Kevin Gregg finished it up with a shutout ninth inning and he improved to 1-0 on the season.
Mark Hendrickson gets the nod tomorrow. He was bombed in the Marlins opener against the Mets earlier this week.
MLB.com beat reporter Joe Frisaro recently answered readers’ questions in a mailbag column. He touches on everything from the Marlins stadium deal to who will close in 2007. Good stuff here. Here also talks about my favorite player, Josh Willingham, and whether he’ll see time behind the plate or not.
